Brief Summary

Eleven men took part in a 6-month Dialectical Behaviour Therapy skills group focussed on reducing problems related to anger and emotion dysregulation. Two men dropped out in the first few weeks, and 2 men joined for the last 2 months; their data were not included in quantitative analyses. Statistically significant decreases of scores occurred from baseline to group completion on measures of depression, anger, and difficulty in emotion regulation. Feedback from a focus group and online survey following skills training completion indicated that the men found the DBT skills training group acceptable and useful. Homework review was their least favourite aspect of group and the skills they used most were from the distress tolerance and mindfulness modules. Recommendations for improvement included having more orientation, mini-reviews of crisis-survival and mindfulness skills, and reducing the time for homework review and increasing it for teaching. This study adds to the growing evidence for DBT skills as a promising intervention for problems related to anger for men.
