Inclusion Criteria

The inclusion criteria were (1) history and clinical presentation (hemiparesis) of a first cerebrovascular accidents verified by computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging, ( at least 6 months to one year of less); (2) aged 40 to 80 years; (3) a significant gait disturbance as evidenced by a gait speed of 0.7m/s or less; (4) independent ambulation for 10m, with or without canes or orthoses, and a score of 4 or 5 on the Functional Ambulation Classification (FAC) scale (no need for assistance); (5) sufficient cognition to participate in the training as assessed by a Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score of 25 or higher; and (6) physician approval to enter testing protocol and intervention.

Exclusion Criteria

The exclusion criteria were (1) neurologic co-morbidity other than stroke; (2) cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, or other medical condition that could influence gait training; (3) refusal to participate in the present study; (4) recurrent stroke; and (5) auditory or visual deficits.
