Effects of Visuospatial Skills Training on Adaptive and Dual Task Performance in Healthy Older Adults - a Randomized Controlled Trial

This randomized controlled trial aims to investigate the effects of visuospatial skill training on gait adaptability, dual-task performance, and quality of life in healthy older adults aged above 60 years. Age-related decline in cognitive and motor functions significantly affects mobility, increasing fall risk and reducing independence. Visuospatial abilities play a crucial role in navigation and coordination, yet their impact on functional gait and dual-task performance remains underexplored.
A total of 42 participants will be recruited and randomly allocated into experimental and control groups using block randomization. The experimental group will undergo an 8-week visuospatial training program using Lumosity-based cognitive games (50 minutes/session, 3 days/week), targeting working memory, attention, processing speed, and cognitive flexibility, while the control group will continue routine activities.
Primary outcomes include gait adaptive task performance assessed through spatiotemporal parameters using a 2D gait analysis system GaitON and dual-task performance using the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test under fixed and variable prioritization conditions. Secondary outcomes include quality of life measured using EQ-5D. Pre- and post-intervention assessments will be conducted to evaluate changes.
The study is expected to provide evidence on the role of visuospatial training in improving cognitive-motor integration, gait adaptability, and functional independence in older adults, with potential implications for fall prevention and rehabilitation strategies.
