Eligibility Criteria
Inclusion Criteria
- •Patients in the emergency room or admitted to the hospital who have non\-severe hypercapnia which is defined as partial pressure of arterial carbon dioxide of 43 \- 69 mmHg and PH above 7\.3 by arterial blood gas.
Exclusion Criteria
- •1\. Patients with any sign of imminent respiratory failure requiring intubation and mechanical ventilation
- •2\. Patients with unstable hemodynamics (systolic blood pressure less than 100 mmHg, mean blood pressure less than 60 mmHg, or heart rate faster than 120 beats per minute
- •3\. Patients with shock, intractable arrhythmia, post\-CPR status, or ECMO
- •4\. Patients with consciousness disorder which would require intubation (e.g., not responsive, agitated, uncooperative, high risk for aspiration)
- •5\. Patients who had facial surgery, trauma or deformity and airway obstruction that precludes application of nasal cannula.
