Inclusion Criteria

1. Adult patients (20-65 yrs) of either sex; 2. ASA physical status I and II; 3. Static pain VAS score of less than 30 mm (i.e. static pain is controlled); 4. Scheduled for major upper abdominal surgery under general anesthesia and thoracic epidural analgesia (e.g. gastrectomy, colectomy, pancreaticodudenectomy, exploratory laparotomy, hepaticojejunostomy)

Exclusion Criteria

Patients receiving IV PCA; Patients in whom epidural infusion has to be stopped because of hypotension; Patients undergoing reoperation for some complication
