Inclusion Criteria

Cataracts with nuclear density 2+ and 3+ graded by the Lens Opacity Classification System III (LOCS III)

Exclusion Criteria

Traumatic cataract; mature and hypermature cataracts; grade 4 nuclear cataract; pseudoexfoliation syndrome; conjunctival scar; significant corneal opacity; glaucoma; ocular hypertension; uveitis; vitreoretinal pathology; previous intraocular surgery; intraoperative complications during cataract surgery; collagen vascular disease; any active eye disease; high myopia; high hyperopia (axial length less than 15 mm); age under 40 years; preoperative cell count less than 1,000 cells per square millimeter or preoperative anterior chamber depth less than 2.5 mm; dry eye syndrome; neovascularization of the iris.
