The criteria of recruitment were patients aged over 40 years with a diagnosis of COPD based on post-bronchodilator ratio of FEV1/FVC < 0.7, smokers or ex-smokers with a smoking history of more than 10 pack-years, and no history of acute exacerbation (AE) for at least three months prior to the enrollment.
Patients meeting any of the following criteria were excluded; current diagnosis of asthma, current active respiratory disorders other than COPD, e.g. lung cancer, tuberculosis or other significant chest x-rays findings not associated with COPD (documented within 1 year). Those with specific disease states; insulin dependent diabetes, and renal failure as well as those with clinically apparent heart failure were also excluded.
