Inclusion Criteria
Patients scheduled to undergo elective cardiac surgery.
Exclusion Criteria
Emergency or inpatient surgery.
Pregnancy.
Age < 18 years.
Known or suspected haemoglobinopathy.
Bone marrow disease.
Haemochromatosis.
End stage renal failure requiring dialysis.
Erythropoetin or iron (IV or oral) in the preceding 4 weeks prior to enrolment.
