- COPD diagnosis according to GOLD criteria; post bronchodilator FEV1/FVC<70%
- Male and female patients aged over 40 years
- Written informed consent by the participant
- Smokers or ex-smokers with a smoking history of more than 10 pack-years
- Lower limb joint surgery in the preceding 3 months
- History of acute exacerbation for at least three months prior to the enrollment.
- Unstable medically to perform exercise tests
- Predominant neurological or musculoskeletal limitation to walking
- Current diagnosis of asthma, current active respiratory disorders other than COPD, e.g. lung cancer, tuberculosis or other significant chest x-rays findings not associated with COPD (documented within 1 year).
