Inclusion Criteria

Positive urine culture for Escherichia coli
Positive clinical manifestations of urinary tract infection
Fever
Renal scan indicating acute pyelonephritis

Exclusion Criteria

History of recurrent urinary tract infection
Renal scarring on the baseline scan
Frequent vomiting
Severe dehydration
Sepsis
Systemic hypertension
Neurogenic bladder
Obstructive uropathy
Low baseline serum levels of vitamin A
Vesicoureteral Reflux grade >III
Urinary calculi
Voiding dysfunctions
Any unilateral or bilateral renals anatomical anomaly

Primary Outcome Measures
NameTimeMethod
The condition of the clinical symptoms of urinary tract infection. Timepoint: One time before the treatment begins and daily up to 10 days after starting treatment. Method of measurement: clinical symptoms of urinary tract infection checklist.
Secondary Outcome Measures
NameTimeMethod
The persistence of the photopenic lesions with or without volume loss. Timepoint: At the beginning of the study (before the intervention) and 6 months later. Method of measurement: 99mTc-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) renal cortical scan.
