Inclusion Criteria

1 Adult male and female subjects who are referred for ECT as well as those who are treated with medication alone.

2 Diagnoses of major depressive Disorder (DSM-IV).

3 Capacity to participate in neuropsychological testing.

4 Preferably, new onset illness in treatment-naive subjects. Or subjects with a Fresh Episode of Depression requiring intervention with antidepressant or ECT

5 Preferably, patients who will likely be available for the 1-month follow up assessment.

Exclusion Criteria

1. Age < 18 Years

2. Mental Retardation

3. Past or Current Neurological Illness (Parkinsons Disease, Epilepsy etc)

4. History of having recieved ECT within past 6 months.

5. Current use of Anti epileptics or Benzodiazepines.

6. Untreated or unstable Medical Condition that may influence Neuropsychological assessments.
