Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

  • 1\) age older than 18 years old; 2\) admission from the emergency department or general ward with sepsis or septic shock defined by The Third International Consensus Definitions for Sepsis and Septic Shock (Sepsis\-3\); 3\) on controlled mechanical ventilation, and 4\) require fluid challenge by physician's discretion.

Exclusion Criteria

  • cardiac arrhythmia, valvular heart disease, intracardiac shunt, intra\-abdominal hypertension, contraindication for sedation, contraindication for using a neuromuscular blocking agent, and pregnancy.
