Brief Summary

Introduction: A common health complication of aging is sarcopenia. Sarcopenia is defined as a decrease in strength, mass and functionality of skeletal muscles. Nutritional supplementation actions combined with a structured physical exercise program have been identified by several studies as the most effective method in the prevention and treatment of sarcopenia. Objective: In this study, which is randomized, double-blind, we associated GABA supplementation (GABA aminobutyric acid) with physical exercises performed at home, with sarcopenic and non-sarcopenic elderly. Methodology: 24 elderly people participated in the study, randomly divided into 2 groups, double-blind, GABA group (n=12) and Placebo group (n=12). The elderly performed physical exercises at home for 16 weeks and received supplementation by capsules (100mg-GABA or incipient placebo) that were administered daily. The presence of sarcopenia was measured by the parameters suggested by the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People 2 (EWGSOP2), the physical conditions by physical tests, anthropometric measurements and sleep quality by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire, before and after the intervention. Results: At times T0 and T16 for the sarcopenic volunteers, a difference was identified for the Handgrip Strength test, in relation to time, in the GABA group (p=0.004) and in the Placebo group (p<0.001), but when performing the delta of the groups, there was no difference significant. Regarding the Muscle Mass Index of the sarcopenic volunteers, there is a difference in the GABA group (p=0.004), and a difference in the Placebo Group (p=0.01), in relation to the final time for the initial time. However, when performing the delta analysis of the groups, a difference was observed between the Gaba group and the Placebo group (p=0.02). Conclusion: 91.6% of the volunteers were no longer considered sarcopenic, according to the parameters for the diagnosis of sarcopenia defined by the EWGSOP2, after supplementation with GABA and a home exercise program. On the other hand, 41.7% of the volunteers who took placebo and did physical exercises at home remained sarcopenic, using the same sarcopenia evaluation criteria
