•Venous HCO3 less than 22 mEq/dl
•Renal Function: 15 ml/min/1.73m2 - 59 ml/min/1.73m2(Both values inclusive)
•Stable renal function for at least one month (less than 5 % fluctuations in GFR).
•Patients who had received bicarbonate therapy for more than two weeks duration in the preceding 6 months
•Patients on hemodialysis
•Structural and functional anomalies of Gastrointestinal tract
•Decompensated chronic liver disease
•Malignancy
•Morbid obesity (BMI >40 kg/m2),
•Immunosuppressive therapy of any kind
•Uncontrolled diabetes mellitus (FBS > 250 mg/dl)
•Overt congestive heart failure
•Presence of chronic infections
•HIV infection
