- Brief Summary
The current study was cross sectional assessing the prevalence and extent of internet addiction, smartphone use and internet gaming disorder in youth population.
400 subjects were included in study. The subjects were assessed using IAT, Korean Smartphone addiction Scale and IGD test.
The subjects were divided according to the course being pursued by students which included School and college students.
The scores of IAT, Korean smartphone addiction Proneness Scale and IGD revealed that the higher scores on these scales varied according to age group they belonged to and course being pursued by subjects. Additionally, gender was also related to the development of IGD. IA was found to be 77.3%, Smartphone addiction was 5% for high risk population and IGD in 6.8% of population.
This is the first study as per author’s knowledge to assess these behaviours at single point of time and has some useful clinical implications. This helped us to identify the population at risk at an early stage and appropriate measures being taken to prevent development of problematic behaviour as this is the future working population of country. There is lack of standard criteria on what qualifies as normal use and abnormal use. The policies pertaining to use and overuse of internet, smartphone and gaming needs to be formulated with structured guidelines for catching this problematic behaviour at an early stage.
This study could only assess these behaviours and association with other psychiatric disorders could not be done, further studies could be designed to study it.
