Forward Head Posture (FHP) is a common postural deviation among young adults, particularly university students, due to prolonged engagement in activities that require forward head positioning, such as studying, using digital devices, and working on computers.FHP is often associated with neck and shoulder pain, reduced range of motion, and impaired functional capacity, ultimately affecting the quality of life and academic performance of affected individuals.

key muscles are involved in maintaining head posture . The sternocleidomastoid (SCM) and scalene muscles, become overactive and shortened due to the forward position of the head. the deep cervical flexors, longus capitis and longus colli, become weak . Posteriorly, the suboccipital muscles, levator scapulae, and upper trapezius tension and tightness.

Key muscles involved in scapular stabilization include the trapezius (upper, middle, and lower fibers), rhomboids, serratus anterior, and levator scapulae.In individuals with FHP, the scapula often assumes a protracted and downwardly rotated position,

Scapular strengthening exercises, resistance bands, target these key muscles to enhance their strength and endurance, thereby improving scapular positioning and stability. Strengthening the scapular retractors, such as the middle trapezius and rhomboids, helps counteract the protracted position of the scapula, while activating the lower trapezius and serratus anterior assists in upward rotation and posterior tilt of the scapula(8). 入选标准

  • 1 University students aged 18-25 years.
  • Individuals diagnosed with Forward Head Posture.
  • Participants experiencing mild to moderate neck or shoulder pain for at least 3 months.
  • Willingness to participate and ability to provide informed consent.
  • No recent history of scapular strengthening exercises within the past 6 months.

排除标准

  • Individuals with any diagnosed cervical or shoulder pathology such as cervical disc herniation, rotator cuff tears, or severe osteoarthritis.
  • History of trauma or surgery in the neck or shoulder region.
  • Participants with neurological conditions affecting posture and mobility.
  • Use of pain relief medications or physical therapy treatments for neck or shoulder in the last 3 months.
  • Pregnancy or any other medical condition contraindicating exercise participation.
