PreOxygenEIT-study: Improving preoxygenation and mask ventilation during induction of general anesthesia by using electrical impedance tomography (EIT)
- Conditions
- apnea due to inducation of anesthesia

Elective surgery, general anesthesia (without intubation / without
relaxation) is required
-Information about the study and written consent to the study
-No contraindications for the application of an EIT belt / for performing
EIT
-Aspiration risk during induction of anesthesia (rapid sequence induction)
-Intubation anesthesia/relaxation required during general anesthesia
-Difficult airway requiring awake fiberoptic intubation
-Emergency intubation/surgery
-Pregnancy
-EIT monitoring not possible due to:
-Immobilization (e.g. unstable spinal trauma / rib /
Sternum, pelvic fractures, etc.) that prohibit usage of EIT belt
or makes electrical impedance measurement impossible
- Patients with inserted transvenous or subcutaneous
Pacemaker, cardioverter (ICD) or other electrical
Pacemakers that are powered by alternating current
Electrical impedance measurement can be impaired in its function
-Patients with skin lesions/drainages/catheters in the area of
Location of the EIT belt

- Primary Outcome Measures
Name Time Method -Amount of ventilated lung / amount of atelectasis in per cent in all 4
different lung regions (ROI 1-4 in EIT monitoring) after preoxygenation /
after mask ventilation
-Resulting loss of lung ventilation (loss of compliance in EIT monitoring)
after preoxygenation / mask ventilation in per cent: Delta of lung
ventilation (Delta Compliance)
- Secondary Outcome Measures
Name Time Method -loss of compliance (ventilator) in per cnt after preoxygenation / mask
ventilation (Delta compliance)
-hemodynamic parameters in electrical impedance tomography (cardiac
index, stroke volume, stroke volume variation, variability of heart rate)
-pulmonal complications (pneumonia, respiratory insufficiency
(reintubation) or hypoxemia (PaO2 < 60mmHg, SpO2 <90% with room air).
