Impact of health education on Hypertensive and Obesity patients amongst residents of Maraimalai Nagar Municipality,Chengalpattu District,Tamilnadu,India– A Community Interventional Trial

INTRODUCTION

Overweight and obesity are universally recognized as a risk factor for numerous health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, some types of cancer, cardiovascular disease, poor quality of life, functional limitations, and mental health concerns

High blood pressure (BP) is ranked as the third most important risk factor for attributable burden of disease in south Asia (2010) studies showed that the crude stroke prevalence in different parts of India ranged from 44.29 to 559/100,000 persons during the past two decades

Justification

•A rise in trends of diseases related to lifestyle like Hypertension and Obesity in Urban society due

–Unhealthy food intake

–Decrease in physical activity

–Busy life schedules.

–Decrease intake of home cooked foods

–Unawareness of healthy food habits.

•Not many studies have been done to demonstrate the effect of health education on Blood Pressure and Weight reduction in Chengalpattu district , tamilnadu

Aim and Objectives

To identify and measure Blood pressure & Obesity indices of hypertensive and obesity patients before health education

To Evaluate the Blood pressure & Obesity indices of hypertensive and obesity patients post health education

OUTCOME MEASURES:

Reduction in Mean Blood Pressure in the Community

Reduction in Mean BMI in the Community

Methodology

Study Design         : Community Interventional Trial

Study area             : SRM Urban Field practice area

Study population : All adults above 18 years of age with Hypertension, Overweight and Obese residing in Maraimalai Nagar municipality ,Chengalpattu district ,Tamilnadu,India.

Study period : 1 year

•Data collection : data of hypertensive and obesity patients will be obtained from family folder of SRM Urban Health Centre . M.M. Nagar

•Sampling method : Simple random sampling

•Eligibility Criteria

–Inclusion criteria:

•All adults above 18 years of age with HTN and who were overweight and obese (BMI>24.9 kg/m2).

•Hypertensive according to JNC 8 2014 of Systolic BP ▁(>)140 mm/hg and/or Diastolic BP ▁(>) 90 mm/hg

•Overweight and Obesity according to WHO and NIH guidelines for Asian individuals define overweight as a BMI - 23 to 24.9 kg/m2 and obesity as a BMI - >25 kg/m2.

•Eligibility Criteria

–Exclusion criteria :

• Those who are

–Not willing to participate in the study or give consent,

–Not available at the time of visits(3 visits)

–Planning to move from place of study and non residents of M.M. Nagar
