- Brief Summary
Considering the rising population of the elderly in India, understandingthe factors that could influence older adults’ participation in InstrumentalActivities of Daily Living (IADLs), especially home management and mealpreparation activities, is important to facilitate their performance. Majority of Indian elders today, as in the past, continue to live in amultigenerational family setting, and hence it is crucial to understand if andhow the family members could influence their participation. Occupational therapy intervention commonlyaddresses IADLs, an essential indicator of healthy aging. However, as there islimited information available regarding older adults’ participation in IADLs,this study could help us to plan culturally tailoredintervention programs for older adults taking into consideration their familymembers too.
It is a qualitative study; hence therecorded focus group discussion will be transcribed and transliterated intoEnglish. Each transcript will be considered as a unit of analysis and thetranscripts will then be read several times to identify codes. Using thematicanalysis, themes and sub-themes will be formulated.
The study participants will be recruited using the purposive sampling methodbased on the eligibility criteria from an Indian metropolis, Mumbai. Aninformed consent will be obtained from all the interested participants viatelephonic interview and will also be sent via email along with the ParticipantInformation Sheet. Once consent is obtained, online FGDs will be scheduled withthe participants. After recruiting participants, they will be allocated to theappropriate focus groups to which they belong based on their relationship withthe older adult, i.e., son, daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, spouse, grandson, granddaughter. Each focus group discussion will have 4-6 participantsand will be conducted on Google meet or Zoom which will be audiorecorded. Field notes will also be taken during the interview.
