Patients with SIRS and patients with sepsis in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit.

Exclusion Criteria

age <18 years, immunosuppression, pregnancy, need for ECMO therapy and neurosurgical main diagnosis

Early detection of sepsis in SIRS patients based on progranulin plasma concentration with a specificity = 73% and a sensitivity of = 80% at least 6 h before sepsis diagnosis supported by standard laboratory chemistry tests.
