The inclusion criteria were as follows: hemiplegic patients who had been diagnosed with stroke at least 6 months ago; patients who had experienced only 1 stroke; patients who scored at least 24 points on the Mini-Mental State Examination; patients capable of unassisted sitting for at least 10 minutes; patients capable of gait a distance of at least 10 m independently, with or without assistive tools; and patients with a Brunnstrom motor recovery stage of at least 4.
The exclusion criteria were as follows: patients participating in another experiment that could affect this study; patients with visual or auditory abnormalities such as vestibular disease, cerebellar disease, unilateral neglect, or apraxia; patients with brain abnormalities outside of the stroke region such as the cerebellum or brainstem; patients with a surgical condition such as a lower limb fracture or peripheral nerve damage; patients with severe renal, musculoskeletal, or cardiovascular disease that would impair training; and patients with visual disability, loss of visual field, or auditory disability.
