patients undergoing laparoscopic or robotic gynecologic surgery
less than four times previous surgeries
Patients younger than 19 years of age and older than 76 years of age
- Pregnant or lactating patients
- Emergency surgery
- Diabetes
- BMI > 30 kg/m2
- Preoperative intestinal paralysis (ileus) or bowel obstruction
- Patients at risk for pulmonary aspiration (esophageal disorders such as significant uncontrolled reflux disease, hiatal hernia, Zenker's diverticulum, achalasia, stricture, previous gastric surgery (for example, gastric bypass), gastroparesis, diabetes mellitus, opioid use, gastrointestinal obstruction or acute intraabdominal processes)
- Dementia
- Patients with severe psychiatric or mental disorders
- Acetaminophen, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug or opioid contraindications
- Alcoholism
- drug abuse
- Allergy to sucralose (synthetic sweetener), combination products (maltodextrin, tomatin)
- History of 4 or more previous surgeries
- Surgery anticipated to involve bowel mobilization or bowel resection and anastomosis
