Inclusion Criteria

physically active male and female subjects participating in sports with a high risk of lateral ankle sprains (soocer, handball, basketball, volleyball)
age: 18-35 years
All subjects have no orthopaedic and neurologic disorders. In addition, subjects of the reference group have no impairments in ankle joint control during daily activity and during exercise. The subjects with chronic ankle instability have a injury history of at least 2 lateral ankle sprains in the last 2 years.

Exclusion Criteria

Subjects (functional instable; mechanical and functional combined)
- orthopaedic and neurological disorders
- any surgery at the ankle joint and the foot
- last ankle sprain in a period of less than three month before the measurement
- any acute impairments due to a recent lateral ankle sprain

Primary Outcome Measures
NameTimeMethod
Comparison of the neuromuscular ankle joint control between the three groups by the means of stereophotogrammetry and electromyography at one time point.
Secondary Outcome Measures
NameTimeMethod
Comparison of the muscle mechanics between the three groups using ultrasound measurements at one time point.

Classification of the four groups by the means of two questionnaires (FAAM-G and CAIT) at one time point.
