Depression is a common mental healthdisorder that affects people of all ages, including the elderly population. However, depression among the geriatric population presents unique challengesand considerations due to factors such as age-related physiological changes, loss of social support systems, and the presence of chronic health conditions. It is important to understand the specific dynamics of depression in thegeriatric population in order to effectively address and support the mental healthneeds of older adults.[1] The geriatric population, typically definedas individuals aged 65 and older, is growing rapidly worldwide. According tothe World Health Organization (WHO), it is estimated that by 2050, the numberof people aged 60 and above will reach two billion, with a significant increasein individuals aged 80 and above. With this demographic shift, the prevalenceof depression among older adults is expected to rise, making it a significantpublic health concern. Depression in the geriatric populationoften goes undiagnosed or untreated due to several factors. Some older adultsmay mistakenly believe that depression is a normal part of aging and fail toseek help. Additionally, symptoms of depression in older adults can be maskedby other health conditions or mistaken for age-related changes, leading tounder-recognition of the problem. This underdiagnosis and undertreatment ofdepression in the geriatric population can have severe consequences, includingreduced quality of life, increased disability, and higher rates of mortality.Known risk factors for depression inelderly population are Low socio-economic status, Poor health status, Lack ofsocial support, Bereavement, Functional disability, Number of chronicillnesses, Living alone,etc..[2] Recognizing the factors influencinggeriatric depression helps the healthcare systems and mental healthprofessionals improving detection, diagnosis, and treatment. In Siddha system ofmedicine we can provide good remedies through internal medicine and externaltherapies which includes meditation, varmam, yoga and special therapies likeDharai. Additionally, promoting community engagement, fostering socialconnections, and providing accessible mental health services are crucial stepsin supporting the mental well-being of the geriatric population. In conclusion, depression in the geriatric population is a complex andsignificant public health concern. Understanding the unique challenges and riskfactors associated with depression among older adults is crucial for effectiveprevention, detection, and treatment. By addressing the mental health needs ofthe geriatric population, we can promote healthy aging, enhance overallwell-being, and improve the quality of life for older adults around the world.
