Bordetella pertussis serology in pregnancy. This study is to study prospectively the incidence of B.pertussis infection in pregnant women in the Groene Hart Hospital in Gouda, the Netherlands. Therefore bloodsamples will be taken from the mother at 12 weeks gestation, at delivery and 2 months after delivery. Also cord blood will be collected at delivery. In these blood samples IgG against pertussis toxin and IgA against whole cell B.pertussis will be measured (RIVM). Also the mothers will be asked to fill in questionaires.

TDaP (Tetanus, Diphtheria, acellular Pertussis) immunization during pregnancy results in an augmentation of maternal antibodies, which are in turn transferred from the mother to fetus and offer additional protection to the newborn infant during the first months of life. The role of these high maternal antibodies levels on the infant’s immune responses after vaccination will be assessed in term and preterm infants (the MAMA study).

Maternal antibodies against pertussis in neonates .Pertussis disease is reported in very young children who have not yet been (fully) vaccinated and did not receive sufficient maternal antibodies. Augmenting maternal antibody titers by administering a prepregnancy booster in women is investigated as a way to protect young children.
