Inclusion Criteria

  • Among the type 2 DM patients, patients with moderate to severe chronic periodontitis, were selected for the study29, and periodontal disease severity was defined according to Page and Eke.30 Moderate periodontitis was defined as two or more interproximal sites, not on the same tooth, with CAL >4 mm or two or more interproximal sites, not on the same tooth, with PD >5 mm. Severe periodontitis was defined two or more interproximal sites with CAL ≥6 mm, not on the same tooth, and one or more interproximal sites with PD ≥5 mm.

Exclusion Criteria

  • Exclusion criteria were any kind of periodontal treatment during the last 6 months or use of antibiotics during the last 3 months, acute oral or systemic infection, periodontal abscess, hemorrhagic disorders, autoimmune diseases, pregnancy, or <15 teeth and partial dentures. Teeth with a mobility grade of III or pockets deeper than 10 mm in the studied areas were not evaluated.
