Glass House Brands Partners with UC Berkeley for Groundbreaking Hemp Research Initiative

• Glass House Brands has established a research collaboration with UC Berkeley to explore hemp-related applications, including medicinal product development, genetics improvement, and AI automation for cultivation.

• The partnership will investigate potential drug development targeting coronaviruses, pain, sleep, inflammation, and cirrhosis, while also evaluating evidence-based approaches to hemp policy and regulation.

• With a newly acquired hemp license and R&D greenhouse capacity to produce 240,000 pounds of biomass annually, Glass House positions itself to become one of the largest hemp cultivators in the United States.

Glass House Brands, one of the fastest-growing vertically integrated cannabis companies in the U.S., announced a strategic research and development agreement with the University of California, Berkeley on April 9, 2025. The collaboration aims to advance hemp research across multiple domains, including novel medicinal product development, genetic improvement, and AI-driven cultivation technologies.
The partnership represents a significant step in addressing the scientific and regulatory challenges facing the hemp industry, with a particular focus on creating evidence-based approaches to policy development that could reduce uncertainty for California hemp growers.

Research Focus Areas

The collaboration will explore several key research domains:
  • Development of novel hemp-derived medicinal products
  • Identification and improvement of hemp genetics
  • Market analysis and supply chain sustainability
  • AI automation for cultivation and production processes
  • Data-driven approaches to hemp policy and regulation
Of particular interest is the planned investigation into potential drug development targeting specific health conditions, including coronaviruses, pain management, sleep disorders, inflammation, and cirrhosis.
Kyle Kazan, Co-Founder, Chairman and CEO of Glass House Brands, emphasized the pioneering nature of the partnership: "This is the first collaboration of its kind in this industry, and Berkeley has a successful history of assisting industry stakeholders to find innovative and sustainable solutions to environmental issues. We are confident that through this agreement, we will be better positioned to navigate the local and national legislative uncertainty for the hemp industry as we prepare to scale the business into the future."

Production Capacity and Strategic Positioning

Glass House obtained a hemp license in 2024 and has already established an active R&D program with dedicated greenhouse facilities. The company reports capacity to produce up to 240,000 pounds of hemp biomass annually, positioning it to potentially become one of the largest hemp cultivators in the United States.
"We have the capacity to be one of the largest hemp cultivators in the United States, so we are excited to explore the potential benefits of this collaboration for farmers, the industry and for the state of California," Kazan noted. "We believe that the demand for hemp-derived products nationally is massive."
The company views the collaboration as strategically important for navigating the evolving regulatory landscape, particularly in anticipation of potential changes to the Federal Farm Bill and corresponding state-level regulations that could open opportunities for national market expansion.

Medical Research Potential

Dr. Orrin Devinsky, Glass House's Medical and Science Advisor to the Board of Directors and Professor of Neurology, Neuroscience and Psychiatry, brings significant credibility to the initiative. Dr. Devinsky was the lead investigator in studies on cannabidiol that ultimately led to FDA approval.
"As a long-time proponent of cannabinoids for treatments, I'm excited to collaborate with the research faculty at UC Berkeley to explore the development of new treatments to improve the quality of life for many with disabling disorders," said Dr. Devinsky.

Industry Context and Significance

The partnership comes at a pivotal time for the hemp industry, which continues to face regulatory challenges despite growing consumer demand for hemp-derived products. California represents one of the largest agricultural markets for hemp in the United States, with significant potential for expansion.
By partnering with UC Berkeley, Glass House aims to develop evidence-based approaches that could help shape future policy while simultaneously advancing the scientific understanding of hemp's potential applications.
The collaboration also highlights the growing acceptance of hemp research within prestigious academic institutions, potentially accelerating the development of standardized practices for cultivation, processing, and product development in an industry that has historically lacked such frameworks.

Market Implications

For Glass House Brands, the partnership represents a strategic diversification beyond its core cannabis business. The company, which operates greenhouse cultivation facilities, manufacturing operations, and retail dispensaries throughout California, sees hemp as a complementary growth opportunity with potentially fewer regulatory constraints than cannabis.
The research findings could also benefit the broader agricultural community in California, where hemp represents an increasingly important crop with diverse applications across multiple industries including textiles, construction materials, and consumer products, in addition to its medicinal potential.
As federal and state regulations continue to evolve, partnerships between industry leaders and academic institutions may play a crucial role in establishing the scientific foundation needed for evidence-based policy development and sustainable industry growth.
