Myriad Genetics Expands Prenatal Testing Access with Retail Launch of SneakPeek Early Fetal Sex Test

  • Myriad Genetics has launched SneakPeek, the first at-home early fetal sex DNA test, in over 8,800 retail locations including Walmart, Walgreens, and CVS, making it accessible as early as six weeks into pregnancy.

  • The SneakPeek test boasts over 99% accuracy in determining fetal sex and uses a nearly painless blood collection method with the patented SneakPeek Snap device, with results delivered as quickly as the same day.

  • Alongside the retail expansion, Myriad has introduced the "Know More Sooner" educational website providing comprehensive information about prenatal genetic testing options, including SneakPeek, Foresight Carrier Screen, and Prequel Prenatal Screen.

Myriad Genetics has significantly expanded access to prenatal genetic testing with the nationwide retail launch of SneakPeek, the first at-home early fetal sex DNA test that can be used as early as six weeks into pregnancy. The test is now available over the counter at more than 8,800 retail locations, including Walmart, Walgreens, and CVS stores across the United States.
The retail expansion addresses a clear consumer need, as a 2024 survey revealed that 82% of expectant parents want to know their baby's sex before delivery, with a two-to-one preference for purchasing such tests in-store rather than ordering online.
"Our commitment to supporting new families is about providing trusted, affordable and accessible solutions that empower expectant parents with information when and where they want it," said Melissa Gonzales, president of women's health at Myriad Genetics. "By expanding access of the SneakPeek test through national retail partners, we're making it easier for more families to experience the meaningful moment of gender discovery and plan and prepare for parenthood."

How SneakPeek Works

The retail test kit features the patented SneakPeek Snap device, which collects a blood sample from the user's upper arm with minimal discomfort. After collection, the sample is mailed to SneakPeek's laboratory using the included postage-paid envelope. Results are delivered through a celebratory text message and email as soon as the same day the sample is received.
According to clinical validation studies, SneakPeek offers over 99% accuracy in detecting a baby's gender as early as 6 weeks into pregnancy. The test has been available online and through doctor's offices since 2015, but the retail expansion significantly increases its accessibility.

Comprehensive Prenatal Testing Portfolio

In addition to the retail expansion, Myriad Genetics has launched a new educational website called "Know More Sooner," which provides comprehensive information about reproductive and prenatal genetic testing options. The site aims to address knowledge gaps revealed in a recent survey where four in ten respondents reported they had not been offered any form of noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT).
"Many patients don't initially understand the importance of prenatal genetic screening, but with Myriad's prenatal screens, couples can discover helpful insights earlier in the pregnancy," explained Dr. Dallas Reed, MD, FACMG, FACOG, obstetrician-gynecologist and medical geneticist who serves as the Principal Medical Advisor of Women's Health for Myriad Genetics. "Having this information allows patients to meet with specialists sooner, choose a birthing location appropriate for their situation, and/or talk with others who have had similar experiences."
Myriad's complete prenatal testing portfolio includes:
  • SneakPeek Gender Test: Predicts fetal sex as early as six weeks with greater than 99% accuracy
  • Foresight Carrier Screen: Identifies carriers of serious inherited conditions
  • Prequel Prenatal Screen: Assesses pregnancy risks for chromosomal conditions as early as eight weeks

Meeting Clinical Guidelines and Consumer Demand

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends that carrier and cell-free DNA screening be offered to all pregnant patients regardless of ancestry, maternal age, or risk of chromosomal abnormality. Myriad's expanded testing access helps healthcare providers meet these guidelines.
"The lack of understanding of the benefits of genetic testing is why we created the Know More Sooner website. Offering resources, answering questions, and sharing basics about genetic testing are essential steps in helping women better understand pregnancy and make informed decisions," said Gonzales. "Most families find genetic screening reassuring. If a possible concern is identified, screening gives you time to pursue diagnostic testing and learn more about your baby's needs from the start."
The retail launch of SneakPeek also kicks off a product rebrand, new packaging design, and website update centered on the moment of gender discovery as a key milestone in parental bonding, scheduled for completion in 2025. The brand's new tagline - "Plan for Joy" - celebrates the meaningful moments of connection amidst the challenges of pregnancy.
For expectant parents seeking early information about their pregnancy, the expanded retail availability of SneakPeek and Myriad's comprehensive educational resources provide valuable options for informed decision-making during this critical time.
