UAB Study Explores Bioness Integrated Therapy System (BITS) for Visual Impairments

  • The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is conducting a study to assess the Bioness Integrated Therapy System (BITS) for treating visual impairments.
  • Researchers aim to establish baseline data for BITS and evaluate its clinical utility in addressing visual deficits in healthy older adults.
  • The study will compare BITS data with Dynavision to analyze visual scanning capabilities in participants aged 50-59.
  • Participants meeting specific health criteria will undergo functional screenings and tests on both BITS and Dynavision, receiving a $25 gift card.
Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) are conducting a study to evaluate the Bioness Integrated Therapy System (BITS) as a tool for vision rehabilitation. The study aims to establish baseline data for BITS and compare it to Dynavision in assessing visual scanning capabilities. This research is focused on healthy adults aged 50-59 and seeks to understand the clinical implications of BITS in treating visual impairments.
The study is actively recruiting participants who are healthy adults aged 50-59 without physical, visual, or cognitive impairments, and no history of seizures or balance problems. Participants must be able to walk without assistive devices and be English speakers. The study protocol involves a 60-minute session where participants complete a short demographic survey, undergo a quick functional screening of upper extremities, and perform four tests on both the BITS and Dynavision systems.
The primary objective is to calculate baseline data for BITS and identify its clinical implications in treating visual impairments. A secondary goal is to compare the baseline data of BITS to Dynavision for visual scanning. Participants will receive a $25 gift card for their involvement in the study. Interested individuals can participate by filling out a survey. Further information can be obtained by contacting the researchers at almulhim@uab.edu.
