Two NHS hospital trusts, Imperial College and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, are pioneering the use of artificial intelligence to identify individuals at risk of developing type 2 diabetes up to a decade in advance. The AI system, named Aire-DM, analyzes electrocardiogram (ECG) heart traces to detect subtle indicators of the condition that are often missed by clinicians.

AI-Powered Early Detection

Aire-DM is being trained to identify early warning signs of type 2 diabetes through routine ECG scans. Early research indicates that the system can predict risk with about 70% accuracy. According to Dr. Fu Siong Ng, the lead researcher, incorporating additional patient information such as age, sex, high blood pressure status, and weight can further enhance the AI's predictive capabilities.
An ECG records the electrical activity of the heart, revealing potential issues with rate and rhythm. The AI system detects changes in ECG data that are too subtle and varied for human interpretation. Dr. Ng explains, "It's not as simple as saying it's this or that bit of the ECG. It's looking at a combination of subtle things."

Clinical Trial and Potential Rollout

As part of the trial, up to 1,000 patients across both hospitals will have their ECG scans analyzed by Aire-DM. The goal is to determine if the AI system can effectively detect and predict the onset of type 2 diabetes. While widespread implementation is not immediate, experts hope that Aire-DM could be integrated into the NHS within five years if the trials prove successful.
