AI Model Predicts High Blood Pressure and Complications from ECGs

A new AI model developed by researchers at Imperial College London can predict the risk of high blood pressure and related complications using electrocardiogram (ECG) data. This technology, set for clinical trials with NHS patients, aims to enable earlier intervention and lifestyle changes to prevent hypertension and its serious consequences.

An artificial intelligence (AI) model has been developed to predict both the risk of high blood pressure and which patients may experience complications from it, using data from electrocardiograms (ECGs). This innovative approach, detailed in a study published in JAMA Cardiology, leverages large datasets of over one million ECGs to train the AI, enabling it to identify patients at risk of developing high blood pressure or related complications such as strokes and heart attacks.
Key Findings:
  • The AI model can identify patterns in ECG data that predict high blood pressure risk and potential complications.
  • Patients in the highest risk group have a four times higher chance of developing high blood pressure compared to those in the lowest risk group.
  • The system can also predict the likelihood of strokes, heart attacks, and mortality based on an AI-generated score, independent of other clinical risk factors.
Clinical Trials and Future Applications:
  • Clinical trials are scheduled to begin by mid-2025 at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust hospitals, aiming to evaluate the benefits of this AI model in real-world patient care.
  • The trials will involve patients from both outpatient clinics and inpatient medical wards, focusing on the potential for earlier intervention and treatment.
Expert Insights:
  • Dr. Arunashis Sau, the lead researcher, emphasizes the importance of early identification of at-risk patients to motivate lifestyle changes that could prevent high blood pressure.
  • Dr. Fu Siong Ng, senior author, highlights the credibility and reliability of the AI tool in predicting health risks and its potential to significantly improve patient outcomes through earlier intervention.
This AI-enhanced ECG technology represents a significant advancement in the early detection and management of high blood pressure, offering a promising tool for reducing the risk of serious cardiovascular events. The research was supported by the British Heart Foundation and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Imperial Biomedical Research Centre (BRC), underscoring the collaborative effort to develop new diagnostics and treatments for patients.
