A forward-thinking GP practice in Midlothian, Penicuik Medical Practice, is actively embracing clinical research opportunities, starting with a Long COVID trial. This initiative aims to benefit both its patients and staff by expanding research access within primary care.

Collaboration with NHS Research Scotland

Penicuik Medical Practice partnered with the NHS Research Scotland (NRS) Primary Care Network. Lead Research Nurse Andrew Deans, based in NHS Lothian, coordinated and facilitated the Long COVID trial, leveraging his extensive experience in respiratory medicine clinical trials.

Positive Feedback and Encouragement

Practice Manager James Reilly and Dr. Drummond Begg, who led the trial, expressed satisfaction with the experience. They are now encouraging other primary care locations to engage in research to improve patient access and enhance staff awareness of research opportunities outside of hospitals.
James Reilly noted, "It was a no brainer for a practice like us to get involved... We're currently working through our Long COVID trial, and it's been very positive." He also highlighted the supportive structure provided by Andrew Deans, which made the process manageable despite the practice's busy schedule.

Improving Patient Access and Staff Well-being

Dr. Drummond Begg emphasized the importance of making research local, stating, "...having this convenience – the ability to participate on their doorstep – has improved their research experience." He also pointed out that offering research opportunities can aid in recruiting new doctors and reducing burnout by adding variety to their roles.

Impact and Future Directions

Andrew Deans highlighted the Penicuik trial as a model for what research can achieve in general practices, raising the profile of accessible research opportunities. He expressed gratitude for the participation of both the practice staff and the patients, whose involvement is crucial for the success of such trials.
The initiative underscores the potential for primary care settings to contribute significantly to clinical research, providing valuable insights and improving patient outcomes while enhancing the professional environment for healthcare providers.
