Efficacy and Safety of Zihua Wenfei Granules in Treating Postinfectious Cough
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial evaluates the efficacy and safety of Zihua Wenfei granules (ZHWFG) for treating postinfectious cough, specifically targeting the wind-cold invading lungs syndrome in traditional Chinese medicine. The study aims to assess the cough resolution and relief rates, alongside monitoring adverse events, across multiple centers in China.
Postinfectious cough, a common condition following respiratory tract infections, often leads patients to seek medication due to its impact on daily life. Traditional treatments have limitations, prompting interest in alternative therapies like Zihua Wenfei granules (ZHWFG), a Chinese herbal prescription.
ZHWFG is designed to clear wind-cold, relieve cough, and reduce phlegm, with pre-clinical studies indicating its potential benefits. This trial focuses on patients aged 18-65 with postinfectious cough lasting 3-8 weeks, excluding those with other respiratory conditions. Participants are randomly assigned to receive either ZHWFG, a combination of ZHWFG and placebo, or a placebo alone, administered three times daily for 14 days.
The primary outcomes measure the proportion of patients achieving complete cough resolution and relief, assessed through a visual analog scale (VAS). Secondary outcomes include time to cough resolution and relief, changes in cough symptom scores, TCM syndrome scores, and quality of life impacts. Adverse events are closely monitored, with specific protocols for reporting serious incidents.
This study, approved by the Biomedical Ethics Committee and registered with the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry, represents a significant step in evaluating the role of traditional Chinese medicine in managing postinfectious cough. By comparing ZHWFG's efficacy and safety against a placebo, the trial aims to provide valuable insights into alternative treatment options for this persistent condition.
