Flatiron Health and the University of Colorado Cancer Center (CU Cancer Center) have announced a groundbreaking collaboration to revolutionize clinical trial data management through the implementation of Flatiron Clinical Pipe™. This innovative technology will be deployed across UCHealth's network, marking a significant advancement in clinical research efficiency.
The partnership introduces an advanced electronic health record (EHR) to electronic data capture (EDC) connector system, designed to eliminate redundant data entry and streamline clinical trial operations. This technological integration represents a major step forward in modernizing cancer research infrastructure.
Transformative Impact on Clinical Research
Recent research published in ESMO Real-World Data and Digital Oncology highlights the remarkable efficiency of Flatiron Clinical Pipe™. The system successfully processed 11,342 individual data points across 955 unique case report form submissions, with users requiring only 37 seconds on average to complete each submission.
Emily Akin, Head of Research Network at Flatiron Health, emphasized the broader implications: "Flatiron Clinical Pipe—currently in use at over 85 academic medical centers and community oncology sites, representing a network of over 300 unique locations—reduces the burden on clinical trial site teams, making clinical trials more accessible to conduct, streamlining data management, and accelerating study timelines."
Enhanced Patient Care Through Efficiency
Dr. Christopher Lieu, Associate Director of Clinical Research at the CU Cancer Center, highlighted the strategic importance of this collaboration: "Flatiron's Clinical Pipe technology will support our trial teams and enable our network of providers to provide the best care possible, balancing patient needs with more efficient data management."
The implementation of this technology promises to:
- Reduce manual data entry errors
- Decrease administrative workload
- Allow healthcare providers to dedicate more time to patient care
- Accelerate the pace of clinical research
Network-Wide Implementation
The collaboration leverages UCHealth's extensive healthcare network, which encompasses 14 acute-care hospitals and hundreds of physicians across Colorado, southern Wyoming, and western Nebraska. As the region's only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, CU Cancer Center's adoption of this technology sets a new standard for clinical research efficiency.
This integration represents a significant step toward modernizing clinical trial execution, potentially accelerating the development of new cancer treatments and improving patient outcomes through more efficient research processes.
