Abolis Biotechnologies and EUROAPI Partner to Restore European Corticosteroid Production Through Microbial Biotechnology
核心洞察
Abolis Biotechnologies (搜索) and EUROAPI have formed a strategic partnership to develop microbial bioprocesses for producing corticosteroids (搜索) and 20 active pharmaceutical ingredients in Europe.
The collaboration is part of the Med4Cure program under the Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI), receiving up to €140 million in public support through France 2030.
The partnership aims to address Europe's heavy dependence on Asian manufacturers, who currently control nearly 80% of the global corticosteroid market.
Abolis Biotechnologies (搜索) and EUROAPI have announced a strategic partnership to develop innovative microbial bioprocesses for producing corticosteroids (搜索) and other critical active pharmaceutical ingredients in Europe, addressing the continent's heavy reliance on Asian manufacturers. The collaboration is part of the Med4Cure program under the Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI), validated by the European Commission with public support of up to €140 million through France 2030.
Addressing European Pharmaceutical Dependency
The partnership directly tackles a critical vulnerability in European pharmaceutical supply chains. Currently, nearly 80% of the global corticosteroid market is controlled by Asian producers, particularly in China and India, where manufacturing costs are lower. This dependence has rendered supply chains vulnerable to geopolitical, logistical, and health crises, contributing to recurring supply shortages observed in recent years.
Abolis Biotechnologies (搜索) will provide EUROAPI with its expertise in designing and developing innovative microbial bioprocesses to bring back competitive corticosteroid production to Europe. The company will be responsible for developing microbial strains and associated bioprocesses for producing corticosteroids (搜索) used in treating allergic and immune diseases (搜索).
Innovative Biotechnology Approach
One of the key innovations in this process is based on enhanced synergy between biotechnology and corticosteroid chemistry. This approach represents a novel strategy for pharmaceutical manufacturing that combines microbial biotechnology with traditional chemical synthesis methods.
Production will be distributed between EUROAPI's sites in St Aubin-lès-Elbeuf in Normandy and Vertolaye in Auvergne, with the latter being the only European site currently producing this type of treatment. In return for its contributions, Abolis Biotechnologies (搜索) will receive funding from Bpifrance (搜索) and EUROAPI over a four-year period.
Industry Leadership and Collaboration
The Med4Cure program brings together several academic institutions, including the Institute of Chemistry for Health at Chimie Paris Tech (搜索), the CARMEN laboratory at INSA Rouen (搜索), the CEISAM laboratory at the University of Nantes, and Toulouse INP (搜索), creating a comprehensive collaborative ecosystem.
"We are delighted to announce this partnership with EUROAPI, which aims to regain European pharmaceutical sovereignty in a sustainable and cost-competitive manner," said Cyrille Pauthenier, co-founder and President of Abolis Biotechnologies (搜索). "This will be achieved through a strategy combining biotechnology and chemistry in an innovative way. Through the Med4Cure program, Abolis Biotechnologies will actively contribute to securing supply chains, enabling us to accelerate our growth strategy and consolidate our position as a European leader in the fields of industrial biotechnology and the microbiome."
David Seignolle, CEO of EUROAPI, added: "EUROAPI is delighted to bring together a collaborative ecosystem comprising innovative companies such as Abolis Biotechnologies (搜索) and leading academic teams. With the support of the IPCEI framework, we have joined forces to work together on regaining pharmaceutical sovereignty, particularly in the key area of corticosteroids (搜索)."
