The Vancouver-based biotechnology company's research, presented at the Endocrine Society's annual meeting in San Francisco, suggests these engineered tissues could offer a functional cure for a life-threatening condition that currently lacks adequate treatment options.
Breakthrough in Adrenal Function Restoration
The preclinical studies showed that adrenal BTTs containing human adrenal cells, when implanted into adrenalectomized mice, successfully produced cortisol in response to adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulation. Crucially, these bioprinted tissues followed the animals' natural circadian fluctuations in hormone levels, addressing a key limitation of current treatments.
"Our research shows that Aspect's adrenal BTTs successfully replicate healthy human adrenal gland function by releasing cortisol in a pattern that follows the natural daily rhythms of hormone release and by responding appropriately to a stimulus that mimics a stress response," said Sam Wadsworth, Chief Scientific Officer at Aspect Biosystems (search).
When exposed to high levels of injected ACTH, mice with the bioprinted tissues demonstrated rapid increases in circulating cortisol, confirming functional responsiveness. In contrast, control animals receiving cell-free implants showed no significant cortisol levels and failed to respond to ACTH stimulation.

The bioprinted adrenal tissues maintained their functionality throughout the study period of over six months, demonstrating sustained therapeutic potential. Importantly, the BTTs improved animal survival rates compared to controls, suggesting significant clinical benefits for patients with primary adrenal insufficiency (search).
