The restructuring represents a fundamental shift toward external partnerships and a smaller internal workforce to position the organization "for long-term success in a rapidly evolving global environment."
Strategic Consolidation and Workforce Reduction
The company will consolidate its R&D teams around six sites located in biotech hubs, though CSL (search) has not disclosed the specific number of employees affected by the workforce reduction. More details about the impact are expected to be presented in the company's annual earnings results in August.
"We will increasingly depend on a more optimal mix of internal capabilities and external partnerships to build and deliver our R&D pipeline," a CSL (search) spokesperson told Fierce Biotech. "This will require a smaller global internal workforce in the future."
The simplified operating model is designed to increase the flexibility and variability of CSL (search)'s spending, according to the company spokesperson. CSL operates through several business units including CSL Behring, which encompasses CSL Plasma and focuses on rare and serious conditions like bleeding disorders (search), immunodeficiencies (search) and neurological disorders (search); CSL Seqirus (search), the vaccine subsidiary; and CSL Vifor (search), which concentrates on iron deficiency (search) and nephrology.
Previous R&D Site Closures
This restructuring follows CSL Behring's closure of its U.S. R&D hub for cell and gene therapy in Pasadena, California, in fall 2023. Approximately 60 workers at the site were affected by the shutdown, which was part of a larger strategic rethink around ex vivo lentiviral vector (LVV)-based gene therapies at CSL (search).
The decision also impacted the company's gene therapy labs and manufacturing facilities in Marburg, Germany; Bern, Switzerland; and Sydney, Australia, which were undergoing changes at the time.
Hemgenix Challenges Drive Strategic Pivot
CSL Behring has encountered significant obstacles with its gene therapies, particularly its hemophilia B (search) gene therapy Hemgenix. Despite receiving FDA approval at the end of 2022, the adeno-associated virus (AAV) vector treatment had only been delivered to 12 patients during the 12 months that ended in June 2024.
The limited uptake reflects several factors: not all hemophilia B (search) patients are eligible for Hemgenix, and payers are likely to restrict the drug's use to patients with severe or moderately severe disease. CSL (search) estimates that approximately 1,000 Americans could potentially benefit from Hemgenix.
Strategic Platform Focus
The global organization highlights four strategic platforms on its R&D site: plasma technology, recombinant technology, cell and gene therapy, and vaccine technology. The consolidation strategy aims to optimize resources across these core areas while leveraging external partnerships to fill pipeline gaps and reduce internal development risks.
