The Congenital Heart Initiative: Redefining Outcomes and Navigation to Adult Centered Care (CHI-RON) study is set to transform the landscape of care for adults living with congenital heart defects. Led by Dr. Thomas Carton of the Louisiana Public Health Institute and Dr. Anitha John of George Washington University and the Children’s National Hospital, the study addresses critical gaps in the transition and ongoing management of these patients.
The CHI-RON study focuses on improving patient-centered care and navigation through the complex healthcare system. Adults with congenital heart defects often face unique challenges as they transition from pediatric to adult care, including finding specialized providers and managing long-term complications. The study aims to redefine outcome measures to better reflect the needs and experiences of this population.
Dr. Carton, chief data and strategy officer of the Louisiana Public Health Institute, brings expertise in public health research and data analysis to the project. Dr. John, medical director of the Washington Adult Congenital Heart Program at the Children’s National Hospital and professor of pediatrics at George Washington University, contributes extensive clinical experience in managing congenital heart defects.
The Grand Rounds session discussing the CHI-RON study was held on Friday, November 1, 2024. The study is expected to provide valuable insights into improving the quality of life and long-term health outcomes for adults with congenital heart defects.
