核心洞察
Gilead Sciences has opened a 182,000-square-foot research centre at its Foster City, California headquarters, co-locating oncology (搜索), inflammation (搜索) and data science teams for the first time.
The five-storey facility will house around 325 employees, including 260 laboratory scientists, in reconfigurable laboratory neighbourhoods designed to adapt as research priorities shift.
The building is one of three Foster City projects under Gilead's $32bn US investment programme, alongside a Technical Development Center due in 2027 and a biologics facility slated for 2029.
Gilead Sciences has opened a 182,000-square-foot research centre at its Foster City, California headquarters, bringing its oncology (搜索), inflammation (搜索) and research data science teams under one roof for the first time. The five-storey facility, which expands the company's capabilities in inflammation, oncology and data science, was officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by company leaders, employees and guests, including US Representative Kevin Mullin of California's 15th Congressional District and California State Assembly member Diane Papan.
The building will accommodate around 325 employees, including 260 laboratory scientists, working across flexible "laboratory neighbourhoods" designed to be reconfigured as research priorities shift. A dedicated bridge connects the centre to an adjacent building for equipment and material transfers, while a central Research Quad is intended to encourage cross-team collaboration. The site also provides shared technology platforms and collaborative work areas.
Leadership Frames Facility as Discovery Accelerator
Chair and CEO Daniel O'Day said the facility would help the company "deliver more breakthrough medicines faster." He added: "We are in a moment of unprecedented opportunity in science and technology. Our new research centre will help Gilead scientists make the most of that opportunity, delivering more breakthrough medicines faster. As part of our broader $32bn investment in the US, this new facility also reflects our long-term commitment to American innovation."
Flavius Martin, Gilead's executive vice-president of Research, said co-locating research disciplines and expanding data science capacity would "accelerate discovery." He stated: "The future of biomedical innovation depends on bringing together exceptional science, advanced technologies and diverse expertise. This centre was designed to do exactly that. By co-locating key research disciplines and expanding our data science capabilities, we are strengthening the infrastructure needed to accelerate discovery and advance meaningful innovations."
Part of a Broader $32bn US Commitment
The building is one of three major Foster City projects under Gilead's $32bn US investment programme running through 2030. A Technical Development Center is due to open in 2027, and a biologics manufacturing facility that broke ground in August is slated for 2029.
Gilead first committed to the $32bn figure in May last year, when it added $11bn in new capital and operational spending to an already-planned $21bn programme. The company has said the combined investment is projected to generate $43bn in US economic value and support more than 10,500 high-quality domestic jobs by 2030.
Roughly $4bn of the newer tranche is earmarked for capital projects such as labs and equipment, with a further $5bn for technology, operations and R&D site activities and $2bn for digital and advanced engineering work.
Workforce and Sustainability Profile
Gilead currently employs 11,000 people in the US, with more than 7,400 based in California and approximately 4,700 in the Bay Area. The company has said the new site is targeting LEED Gold certification, built on all-electric systems, energy-efficient design and drought-tolerant native planting.
The Foster City expansion places Gilead among a cluster of major US drugmakers that have scaled up domestic manufacturing and R&D commitments during the past year. In May 2026, Gilead concluded its acquisition of Tubulis (搜索), a Germany-based biotechnology company developing next-generation antibody-drug conjugates (搜索), in a transaction valued at up to $5bn.
