- Gilead Sciences and the Pan American Health Organization signed an agreement to accelerate access to twice-yearly lenacapavir for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis across all PAHO Member States. - The deal uses PAHO's Regional Revolving Funds to create a coordinated regional procurement pathway, adding 14 countries outside Gilead's existing voluntary licensing agreements. - PAHO estimates roughly 140,000 new HIV infections occur annually in Latin America and the Caribbean, where new infections rose 13% between 2010 and 2024. - Lenacapavir is a first-in-class HIV capsid inhibitor with a multi-stage mechanism of action and no known in-vitro cross-resistance to existing antiretroviral classes.
- Gilead Sciences has opened a 182,000-square-foot research centre at its Foster City, California headquarters, co-locating oncology, inflammation and data science teams for the first time. - The five-storey facility will house around 325 employees, including 260 laboratory scientists, in reconfigurable laboratory neighbourhoods designed to adapt as research priorities shift. - The building is one of three Foster City projects under Gilead's $32bn US investment programme, alongside a Technical Development Center due in 2027 and a biologics facility slated for 2029. - Gilead said the combined investment is projected to generate $43bn in US economic value and support more than 10,500 domestic jobs by 2030.
- Gilead Sciences opened a 182,000-square-foot Research Center at its Foster City, Calif. headquarters, expanding capabilities in oncology, inflammation, and research data science. - The facility supports approximately 325 employees, including 260 laboratory scientists, and is designed for LEED Gold certification with all-electric systems and energy-efficient design. - The Research Center is part of a planned $32 billion U.S. investment in research, development, and manufacturing through 2030, alongside a Technical Development Center and a new biologics facility. - Chairman and CEO Daniel O'Day said the center will help Gilead scientists deliver "more breakthrough medicines faster" amid an "unprecedented opportunity in science and technology."
- Vivace Therapeutics announced leadership appointments and FDA "Safe to Proceed" clearance as it prepares to advance VT3989 into the pivotal Phase 3 sTEADfast trial in mesothelioma. - VT3989 is a first-in-class, orally administered TEAD autopalmitoylation inhibitor targeting the Hippo signaling pathway, with Fast Track and Orphan Drug designations from the FDA. - The Phase 3 registrational study will enroll mesothelioma patients previously treated with both combination immunotherapy and combination chemotherapy, with initiation planned for later this year. - Craig Gibbs, PhD, MBA, was named President and CEO, Ellen Lubman, MBA, joined as Chief Business and Strategy Officer, and Tim Clackson, PhD, was appointed to the Board of Directors.
- Cellares, a South San Francisco cell therapy manufacturing specialist, plans to lay off 100 employees following the loss of a partnership with an unspecified large pharmaceutical customer. - CEO Fabian Gerlinghaus said the loss "requires us to resize the company," with affected roles primarily in software engineering, quality control, design, and manufacturing. - The company says it has more than doubled its customer base since the start of the year and that its Cell Shuttle technology is "proven in the clinic." - Cellares retains partnerships with Bristol Myers Squibb, Gilead's Kite Pharma, Sonoma Biotherapeutics, and Cabaletta Bio, and recently won FDA PreCheck Pilot Program designation.
- Nurix Therapeutics has appointed Wes Burwell as its new Chief Human Resources Officer, effective August 20, 2026, as the company advances its late-stage clinical pipeline and prepares for commercialization. - Mr. Burwell brings more than 20 years of human resources leadership experience in life sciences, including roles at Bolt Biotherapeutics and Global Blood Therapeutics. - The appointment supports Nurix's evolution from a research and early clinical-stage company into a fully integrated biopharmaceutical organization focused on targeted protein degradation medicines. - Nurix's pipeline includes bexobrutideg (a BTK degrader co-developed with Roche), NX-1607 (a CBL-B inhibitor), and degraders of IRAK4 and STAT6 in collaboration with Gilead and Sanofi.
- Khartis Therapeutics raised $50 million in Series B financing led by Forge Life Science Partners, bringing total capital raised to $95 million. - The lead program is the first oral, selective IGF-1R inhibitor designed specifically for the treatment of thyroid eye disease (TED). - The financing will support advancement of the lead program toward the clinic and continued development of a broader oral small molecule immunology pipeline. - Khartis was founded in 2024 by a team that previously worked together at XinThera, acquired by Gilead Sciences in 2023.
- Nucleai and Gilead Sciences are collaborating to apply AI-powered Tissue Intelligence to Gilead's global antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) clinical development programs across multiple oncology indications. - The collaboration has analyzed large datasets of H&E and IHC whole-slide images from several Gilead clinical studies, generating candidate spatial biomarkers for future scientific presentations and publications. - Nucleai's platform integrates computational pathology, spatial biology, and clinical outcomes data to map protein expression patterns, tumor heterogeneity, and the tumor microenvironment. - The partnership reflects growing industry recognition that AI-powered tissue analytics can strengthen biomarker development and precision medicine across oncology portfolios.
- Eikon Therapeutics has appointed Ching-Pin "CP" Chang, M.D., Ph.D., as Executive Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer, effective September 3, 2026. - Dr. Chang joins from Bristol Myers Squibb, bringing more than two decades of experience spanning academic medicine, foundational research, and drug discovery. - His prior work included building a disease biology program at MyoKardia focused on cardiomyopathies and characterizing mavacamten, later approved for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. - Eikon's leadership expects Dr. Chang's translational expertise to help apply the company's differentiated discovery capabilities to create new medicines for serious illnesses.
- The California Supreme Court ruled 6-1 that drug manufacturers do not owe a duty of care to patients using a nondefective drug to develop or commercialize an allegedly safer alternative sooner. - The decision reverses a lower appellate court ruling and orders dismissal of negligence claims brought by an estimated 24,000 HIV patients against Gilead Sciences. - Plaintiffs alleged Gilead deliberately delayed development of TAF, a drug with fewer side effects, to maximize profits from its existing TDF-based HIV treatments before patent expiration. - The majority warned that imposing a "duty to innovate" would create substantial burdens, risk chilling pharmaceutical innovation, and ultimately undermine public health and patient safety.
