"Although we have treatment options that can be effective for many who have postpartum depression (search), this will be the first drug that only needs to be taken for two weeks and has a rapid onset of a few days."
The medication is taken once daily for 14 days and can begin relieving depressive symptoms in as few as three days, contrasting with traditional SSRIs that generally don't work as quickly and require longer-term use.
Clinical Evidence and Efficacy
Health Canada's approval was based on clinical trial evidence demonstrating the drug's safety and effectiveness. A pivotal study involved 196 women with severe postpartum depression (search) who were randomized to receive either zuranolone or placebo once daily for 14 days. The trial used the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression to measure symptom changes.

Health Canada conducted a "thorough review" of Biogen's evidence and determined that "the drug meets all criteria for safety, effectiveness and quality, and that its benefits outweigh its risks when used as intended."
Treatment Selection and Clinical Application
The medication is recommended specifically for moderate to severe postpartum depression (search), with severity measured by the level of impairment in daily functioning. Symptoms can include depressed mood, severe mood swings, intense anxiety or panic attacks, difficulty bonding with the baby, and overwhelming fatigue beyond typical new parent sleep deprivation.

Global Regulatory Status
