MIND Diet Emerges as Leading Evidence-Based Dietary Strategy for Dementia Prevention

Introduced in 2015 by researchers from Rush University Medical Center and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, the MIND diet combines elements of the Mediterranean and DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diets. "It's like if the Mediterranean and DASH diets had a baby," said Liz Weinandy, a registered dietitian and instructor of practice in dietetics and nutrition at the Ohio State University. "It's taking the best parts of both sides, and both sides are super healthy."
The diet uses a scoring system with a maximum of 15 points, emphasizing nutrient-dense whole foods while limiting those high in saturated fat, sodium, and added sugar. Foods such as nuts, vegetables, and leafy greens are encouraged five or more times per week, with whole grains and beans at least three times per week, and berries at least twice per week. Limiting butter, cheese, red meat, fried foods, sweets, and alcohol also contributes to the score. Evidence suggests that people who score closest to 15 points tend to have a lower risk of developing dementia (search) and experience less brain shrinkage.
The Evidence Behind Key Food Groups
Leafy greens such as kale, spinach, and arugula have the strongest research backing. "They have the most research behind them [and] are shown to be the most powerful," said Jennifer Ventrelle, a registered dietitian and assistant professor at RUSH University. In a 2018 study, people who consumed just over one serving of leafy greens per day had slower cognitive decline than those who rarely ate them. "The difference was equal to having a brain function that was 11 years younger, so it was a huge impact," said Julia Zumpano, a registered dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic's Center for Human Nutrition.
Berries, particularly blueberries and strawberries, offer protective flavonoids. A 2020 study measuring cognitive function in more than 2,000 people found that those who consumed more flavonoids were 40% less likely to have developed dementia (search) compared to those who ate the least. A large 2012 study of more than 16,000 nurses found that those who consumed more blueberries and strawberries experienced slower cognitive aging by up to two and a half years.
Omega-3 fatty acids (search), especially docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) found in fatty fish like salmon, tuna, and mackerel, play a critical role in maintaining cell membrane structure in the brain. A 2023 systematic review linked higher dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids to a lower risk of dementia (search) and cognitive decline, with the strongest protective effects coming from DHA intake.
Olive oil has also demonstrated significant benefits. A large 2024 study found that people who consumed at least 7 grams of olive oil per day showed a 28% lower risk of dementia (search)-related death over 28 years. Extra-virgin olive oil contains "very powerful" antioxidants called oleocanthal that are anti-inflammatory, according to Zumpano.
Diet as Part of a Broader Prevention Strategy

"When you combine the two, it's not one plus one equals two, it's one plus one equals three," said Laura Baker, Ph.D., a gerontologist at Wake Forest University who leads the long-term U.S. POINTER clinical trial examining how lifestyle factors affect dementia (search) risk.
Christy Tangney, Ph.D., a professor of clinical nutrition at Rush University and co-author on MIND diet research, noted important limitations: the trials are largely observational, establishing links without fully explaining causation, and dementia (search) develops slowly over decades. "Don't forget we're talking about a progressive disease that doesn't develop overnight," Tangney said. "Many of these diets should probably be started earlier in midlife to truly be prevention."
Practical Implementation and Individual Variation
Experts emphasize that sustainable habits matter more than perfection. "Anything for a short period of time may have an impact, but it's the long-term diet that you can follow and afford that will be best for your overall health," Tangney said. Frozen and freeze-dried fruits, canned beans, and canned fish are all nutritious, budget-friendly alternatives when fresh options are unavailable.
Researchers also acknowledge that individual responses to diet may vary based on genetics. Jakob Norgren, Ph.D., a postdoctoral researcher at the Karolinska Institute (search), found that higher meat consumption could help lower dementia (search) rates among people with the APOE4 gene variant, though he cautioned against converting these findings into recommendations without more data.
Recent research has also shifted perspectives on eggs. While early MIND diet studies showed no association, a 2024 study found that eating at least two eggs per week was associated with a decreased risk of dementia (search). Experts now recommend eating the yolk, which contains choline and vitamin D critical for brain health.
