Robert Packard Center and ALS United Launch Joint Research Initiative to Target TDP-43 Pathways in ALS
核心洞察
The Robert Packard Center for ALS Research (搜索) at Johns Hopkins and ALS United (搜索) have announced a collaborative funding partnership to support preclinical basic science research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (搜索).
The joint grant will fund research led by Albert La Spada, MD, PhD and Sandrine Da Cruz, PhD investigating alternative polyadenylation-driven RNA mislocalization in TDP-43 proteinopathies (搜索).
This partnership aims to accelerate breakthrough discoveries in ALS (搜索) pathogenesis and identify novel therapeutic targets through strategic research collaboration.
The Robert Packard Center for ALS Research (搜索) at Johns Hopkins and ALS United (搜索) have announced a strategic collaboration to jointly fund preclinical basic science research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (搜索) (ALS (搜索)), marking a significant step toward accelerating breakthrough discoveries in the field.
The partnership will support research led by Albert La Spada, MD, PhD from the University of California, Irvine, and Sandrine Da Cruz, PhD from VIB – KU Leuven (搜索), focusing on a project entitled "Alternative Polyadenylation-Driven Subcellular RNA Mislocalization in TDP-43 Proteinopathies (搜索)." This research aims to test whether TDP-43 dysfunction promotes RNA mislocalization due to alternative polyadenylation, potentially revealing novel pathways of ALS (搜索) pathogenesis and identifying new therapeutic targets.
Strategic Research Collaboration Model
"We are excited to partner with ALS United (搜索) on co-funding this important research," said Christine Vande Velde, Packard Center Scientific Director. "Collaboration, both within the lab and amongst like-minded ALS (搜索) organizations, is a cornerstone of the Packard Center. This work will advance our collective missions to change the course of this disease by engaging in breakthrough research that advances our fundamental understanding of ALS."
The collaboration reflects both organizations' commitment to maximizing research impact through strategic partnerships. Jerry Dawson, President and CEO of ALS United (搜索), emphasized the value of this approach: "Our members have been funding ALS (搜索) research for decades, and we've learned that partnering with established programs like the Packard Center allows us to maximize impact while accessing world-class scientific expertise."
Focus on TDP-43 Pathways
The funded research will investigate TDP-43 proteinopathies (搜索), a critical area of ALS (搜索) research. TDP-43 dysfunction has been implicated in the majority of ALS cases, making it a key target for understanding disease mechanisms. The project's focus on alternative polyadenylation and RNA mislocalization represents a novel approach to understanding how TDP-43 dysfunction contributes to ALS pathogenesis.
Expanding Research Networks
ALS United (搜索) represents a nationwide partnership of 15 independent nonprofit organizations serving more than half of the U.S. ALS (搜索) population. The organization collectively funds millions in research annually through partnerships with prestigious programs, including the Accelerating Medicines Partnership for ALS®, Northeast ALS Consortium, Robert Packard Center for ALS Research (搜索), and the ALS Network's Research Program.
The Robert Packard Center operates as a global consortium with over 325 scientists from 65 institutions across 11 countries. The Center focuses on understanding ALS (搜索) biology and developing therapies through a multidisciplinary, collaborative approach that accelerates high-quality research.
Vande Velde noted that the partnership is intended to serve as a model for future collaborative funding efforts in the ALS (搜索) research community, potentially inspiring similar joint initiatives that could accelerate the pace of discovery in ALS research.
