This study's intervention promotes protection motivation, coping appraisal, threat appraisal, fear and fall risk awareness among older adults in rural communities. The threat appraisal components may also mediate fear or coping appraisal for older adults' intention of preventive behaviour.

入选标准

  • Older adults who lived independently in the community and attended the indicated study locations at the time this study will be conducted. The selected older adults will be those 55 years old and older, able to communicate and understand English or Bahasa Malaysia or Mandarin. Individuals understood the purpose of the study and agreed to participate. The participants will be screened for cognitive impairment using Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) checklist. The study will be included older adults with no cognitive impairment at the cutoff at 25 and above, participants who score GDS of five and below will be included in the study with suggestive of no depression . Furthermore, the older adults with fall risk screening scores of five and above will be included. In addition, older adults who require minimal assistance in ambulatory, primarily ambulatory (assistive devices at times or minimal dependent on motorised or manual wheelchair) or independent in ambulatory will be included.

排除标准

  • The exclusion criteria were participants who had been institutionalised or living in a long-term care facility or assisted living facility, had a severe hearing impairment and were hospitalised due to critical conditions. Their functional status somehow will be affected after hospitalisation. Participants diagnosed or suffering from medical illness or comorbidities such as Parkinson's disease, severe dementia, post-stroke and mental conditions such as schizophrenia and psychotic disorders will be omitted. In addition, older adults with a total score for MMSE were 24 and below (a score indicative of cognitive impairment), severe depression with the GDS scoring of 6 and more (a score of definite depression), and fall risk screening four below will also be exempted. Furthermore, those with recent lower limb fractures or amputated lower/upper limbs, bedridden, paraplegia that could affect their mobility or perform their ADLs. The participants verbalised that they are currently participating in a similar event or any fall prevention education programme. In addition, those participants who decline in participating in the study also will be excluded.
