The American Heart Association (AHA) announced on July 6, 2026, that Bradley A. Maron, M.D., FAHA, has been named the new editor-in-chief of Circulation, the Association's flagship peer-reviewed journal and one of the world's leading scientific publications in cardiovascular medicine. The appointment is effective with the July 6 issue.
Dr. Maron, a board-certified clinical cardiologist, is recognized globally for mechanistic and clinical advances in pulmonary hypertension (搜索), right heart failure (搜索), and cardiomyopathy (搜索). His career bridges patient care, translational science, and precision medicine, with a focus on pulmonary vascular disease—specifically how conditions affecting the blood vessels within the lungs impact the heart.

Leadership and Institutional Roles
Maron currently serves as senior associate dean for precision medicine, director of the Pulmonary Hypertension (搜索) Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center, and the Melvin Sharovsky Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. He is also co-executive director of the University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing in Bethesda, Maryland. He previously held faculty appointments at Harvard Medical School and served as a visiting professor of medicine at Imperial College London.
Maron succeeds Joseph A. Hill, M.D., FAHA, who has led Circulation since 2016, and Joseph Loscalzo, M.D., Ph.D., FAHA, who served as editor-in-chief from 2004 to 2016.

New Editorial Features
Under Maron's leadership, Circulation will roll out several new features, including a Clinician Lighthouse article offering expert-guided interpretation of diagnostic test results and patient management; a Clinician's Corner with clinician-oriented content guiding readers through key decision-making; key clinical trials and guideline manuscripts supported by perspective bundles; graphic abstracts for all research articles; central illustrations for most invited papers; video commentaries for select manuscripts; and a new Patient's Corner article designed for the public and patient community. The journal will also introduce a streamlined manuscript submission process with an accelerated and more transparent review timeline, along with expanded weekly electronic Table of Contents alerts.
New Editorial Team
Maron is joined by a new editorial team that includes Executive Editor Karen E. Joynt Maddox, M.D., M.P.H., FAHA, professor of medicine and public health and co-director of the Center for Advancing Health Services, Policy & Economics Research at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, and Deputy Executive Editor Sadiya S. Khan, M.D., M.Sc., FAHA, the Magerstadt Professor of Cardiovascular Epidemiology at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine.
Ten deputy editors have been appointed for specific topic sections, including Joseph C. Wu, M.D., Ph.D., FAHA, from Stanford University for Fundamental Sciences; Matthew L. Steinhauser, M.D., from the University of Pittsburgh for Translational Science, Therapeutics and Physiology; Jennifer E. Ho, M.D., FAHA, and Ryan J. Tedford, M.D., FAHA, for Clinical Cardiology; Adrian F. Hernandez, M.D., M.H.S., FAHA, and P. Gabriel Steg, M.D., for Clinical Trials; Tiffany Powell-Wiley, M.D., M.P.H., FAHA, for Community Health; Mercedes Carnethon, Ph.D., FAHA, for Population Health; Ana Mocumbi, M.D., Ph.D., for Global Cardiovascular Health; and Thomas M. Maddox, M.D., M.Sc., FAHA, for AI for Process and Science. The journal will also be supported by 27 associate editors and guest editors.
Scientific Background
Maron earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from Williams College and his M.D. from Brown University School of Medicine, after beginning his medical studies at Tulane University School of Medicine. He completed internal medicine training at Boston Medical Center and Boston University School of Medicine, followed by residency and a cardiovascular medicine fellowship at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
His scientific contributions include co-authoring more than 260 scientific publications, discovering novel molecular mechanisms of vascular fibrosis, leading projects that clarified clinical risk and resilience in pulmonary hypertension (搜索), co-leading a project using AI to automate clinical diagnosis, and helping advance the use of network medicine, big data, and computational science to improve disease phenotyping and therapeutic discovery. Maron holds six patents, inventions, and copyrights confirmed or pending.
He brings substantial editorial experience, having served in reviewer and editor roles with multiple leading journals including Circulation, The Lancet, The New England Journal of Medicine, Science Translational Medicine, JAMA: Cardiology, and others. He has also held volunteer leadership roles for the American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology, and the Pulmonary Vascular Research Institute.
