Frank Carter, an Orange County resident and lifelong adventurer, had already hiked the Appalachian Trail over five months in 2019 and cycled cross-country from San Diego to New Smyrna Beach, Florida, in 2020. But his health took an unexpected turn after a routine 5K race in 2021.
"I was wiped out. I just wasn't recovering," Carter told FOX 13 News. "I went to my doctor, had blood tests. Long story short, in two weeks I was getting chemo."
Physicians diagnosed Carter with mantle cell lymphoma (搜索), a rare form of blood cancer that originates in white blood cells called lymphocytes. He underwent 15 rounds of chemotherapy in Orlando. Although the treatment significantly reduced the tumor burden, follow-up examinations revealed lingering traces of the disease, prompting Carter to seek care at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa.
How CAR T-Cell Therapy Works
At Moffitt, oncologists determined Carter was a candidate for CAR T-cell therapy, an advanced form of immunotherapy that reprograms a patient's own immune cells to recognize and eliminate cancer.
"We take those T cells, genetically engineer them by putting something called a CAR into them," explained Dr. Michael Jain, Carter's oncologist at Moffitt Cancer Center. "Now these T cells can see the tumor and get rid of it where before the tumor was able to hide from it."
The one-time infusion proved transformative. More than four years after receiving the treatment, Carter remains cancer-free, underscoring the durable responses achievable with this personalized cellular immunotherapy in patients whose disease persists after conventional chemotherapy.
A 2,341-Mile Journey of Resilience
Throughout his cancer journey, Carter found steadfast companionship in his dog, Amos, whom he brought home just before beginning chemotherapy. "After my cancer diagnosis, I told myself I was going to beat this, and I really wanted a dog during the process," Carter told Moffitt's Endeavor publication. "I got Amos right before my first treatment."
Once recovered, Carter channeled his renewed health into an ambitious goal. He built his own cedar-strip canoe by hand and set out to paddle the entire Missouri River — the longest river in the United States. The pair traveled 2,341 miles from the river's headwaters in Montana to its terminus near St. Louis, Missouri, over 64 days, camping along the riverbank and enduring severe storms, high winds, and hail.
