Muhammad Danish Muhammad Irfan was 16 years old when a prolonged cough escalated into a medical emergency in October 2021. He became breathless and was admitted to the intensive care unit at NUH, where physicians ultimately diagnosed him with lymphoma (搜索) — a type of blood cancer that originates in the lymphatic system and affects infection-fighting white blood cells.

CAR T-Cell Therapy: An Experimental Option for a Pediatric Patient
Faced with relapsed disease, the clinical team turned to CAR T-cell therapy, an immunotherapy in which a patient's own T cells are genetically engineered to recognize and attack cancer cells. Driven by a desire to catch up after putting his information technology studies at Ngee Ann Polytechnic on hold for approximately one and a half years, Danish took on extra modules and graduated in 2025 — half a year earlier than expected. He has received offers in computing courses from four local universities and will join Singapore Management University in August.
Caregiver Resilience and Support Systems
The case also highlights the extraordinary demands placed on caregivers during pediatric cancer treatment. Danish's father, Muhammad Irfan Mohamed Awi, 53, a single father of three, served as the sole designated visitor during periods of social distancing restrictions. For approximately two months, his days revolved entirely around his son's needs. He slept on a sofa bed in his son's hospital room, prepared freshly made meals daily due to Danish's immunocompromised state, and managed household responsibilities between hospital visits.
"It was not easy. I cried when he was sleeping in the ward so he wouldn't know. I kept telling myself that there is somebody out there who is worse off than me," Irfan said. "To all fathers out there who are having challenges, it is important to have a support system. You cannot do it alone."
The successful application of CAR T-cell therapy in this adolescent patient, made possible through institutional ethics approval and charitable funding, represents a noteworthy example of expanding access to advanced immunotherapies beyond adult populations in carefully selected pediatric cases.
