A Cleveland Clinic-led study has identified a significant connection between elevated blood levels of TMAO (搜索) (trimethylamine N-oxide)—a byproduct produced when gut bacteria digest nutrients found in red meat and other animal products—and a higher risk of developing atrial fibrillation (搜索). The findings, published today in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, open the door to potential early interventions through dietary modification.
The research team, led by Robert Koeth, M.D., Ph.D., analyzed blood samples from more than 5,000 people undergoing heart procedures. In parallel, the researchers conducted laboratory studies in cells to better understand the mechanistic role TMAO (搜索) may play in cardiac electrophysiology. Their work revealed that gut microbe-produced TMAO alters the heart's electrical environment, thereby increasing susceptibility to abnormal rhythms.
Atrial Fibrillation (搜索): A Widespread Arrhythmia
Atrial fibrillation (搜索) is the most common type of rhythm disorder originating in the heart's upper chambers, with at least 2.7 million Americans currently living with the condition. Patients typically experience symptoms including fatigue, heart palpitations, trouble breathing, and dizziness. Established risk factors include high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, and obesity. Current management strategies encompass medications and procedures such as ablation, in which scar tissue is created to help the heart's electrical system function more effectively and lower stroke risk.
A Shift Toward Prevention Through Diet
"Most current treatments for atrial fibrillation (搜索) focus on managing the condition, but our findings suggest there may be an opportunity to intervene much earlier through diet," said Dr. Koeth, senior author and electrophysiologist in the Miller Family Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute at Cleveland Clinic.
This latest study builds on more than a decade of Cleveland Clinic research examining the gut microbiome's role in cardiovascular health and disease, including the adverse effects of TMAO (搜索). The research team has previously published numerous studies linking high TMAO levels to increased risk of developing both chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease, including adverse events such as heart attack and stroke. TMAO testing is now widely available and has been incorporated into clinical practice, underscoring the translational potential of these findings for patient care.
