Colorado Teacher Marks 10 Years in Complete Remission After Pioneering CAR T-Cell Therapy at Nebraska Medical Center

A Colorado teacher who arrived in Nebraska a decade ago with a grapefruit-sized tumor pressing against her heart and a prognosis of just months to live is now celebrating 10 years in complete remission, marking a milestone for CAR T-cell therapy at the Fred and Pamela Buffett Cancer Center (搜索) in Omaha.
Amy Cheese, of Fort Collins, Colorado, was diagnosed with lymphoma (搜索) and had exhausted conventional treatment options when she volunteered for a clinical trial in 2016, becoming one of the first patients to receive CAR T-cell therapy at the Nebraska facility.
"Here we are at 10 years, and it's wonderful," Cheese said.
How CAR T-Cell Therapy Works
CAR T-cell therapy involves re-engineering a patient's own immune cells to recognize and attack cancer. Cheese, a third-grade teacher who retired last year, developed a memorable way to explain the complex treatment to her young students.
"I would say that they took my blood out and took out some T-cells, which are to help your body fight against bad things that come in to your body. They sent them off and they turned them into cancer-eating lions and they put them back in and they ate it all up and now it's gone," Cheese said.
Dr. Julie Vose, a hematologist and oncologist at the Fred and Pamela Buffett Cancer Center (搜索), emphasized that the therapy represented a final option for Cheese. "This was kind of a last resort," Vose said.
Months after receiving the infusion of reprogrammed cells, Cheese received the news that would redefine her future. During a follow-up visit captured on camera, a doctor told her, "This shows it's all gone, and that means complete remission."
"I didn't think it was ever going to happen," Cheese said.
The Evolving Landscape of Cellular Therapy
While Cheese's decade-long remission stands as a powerful testament to the therapy's potential, clinicians caution that the field remains in its early stages. Dr. Matt Lunning, medical director of gene and cellular therapy at the Fred and Pamela Buffett Cancer Center (搜索), underscored the novelty of the approach.
"It's a brand new technology with a brand new textbook and an operating manual. So we can't lean on 50 years of experience of some of the drugs that we have that are now half a century old," Lunning said.
For physicians who have dedicated their careers to advancing cellular immunotherapy, long-term outcomes like Cheese's provide profound validation. "You know, it's really gratifying for all of us that do that," Vose said.
A Life Rebuilt
Since achieving remission, Cheese has rebuilt her life. She retired from teaching last year and now spends her time with her grandchildren, including fishing trips with her grandson.
"I'm so thankful for everybody that gets to benefit from it, because cancer is an absolutely horrible, horrible thing," Cheese said.
Reflecting on her journey and the city where she received her life-saving treatment, Cheese expressed a deep, enduring connection. "I just thank God that I'm alive for another year. And every time I hear Omaha, Nebraska, it's like another home for me. It will always be a special place. You just have that connection you can't explain because you are just thankful to be alive."
On Friday, the UNMC (搜索) community and Nebraska Medicine (搜索) colleagues will gather to celebrate the patients and breakthroughs of CAR T-cell therapy, honoring milestones like Cheese's decade-long remission that continue to shape the future of cancer treatment.
