Environmental Testing Begins in Ladera Ranch After Rare Childhood Cancer Cluster Concerns

Cal State Fullerton (搜索) researchers began collecting environmental samples from three Ladera Ranch parks after at least six children were diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma (搜索) since 2013.
Surrounding areas have recorded 9 to 12 cases of Ewing and synovial sarcoma (搜索) with six deaths, though a 2024 county review found no unusual pattern.
Residents are pressing the homeowners association to stop pesticide spraying, while a law firm investigates possible environmental exposures.
Environmental testing officially began Sunday in Ladera Ranch, an affluent master-planned community in Orange County, California, where concerns over a possible childhood cancer cluster have intensified after at least six children connected to the area were diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma (搜索) since 2013.
Cal State Fullerton (搜索) students and researchers gathered samples from three parks in the Ladera Ranch area to look for environmental links to the cancer cases. Results from the university could come as early as the end of the week, according to reporting by NBC 4.
"It's very difficult to prove causation, and we don't even know that this is environmental. It could be something else that's potentially causing childhood cancers, but what we want to do is figure out if there is something in the environment. We can figure out if it's here," said Professor Daniel Curtis of the chemistry department.
Case Numbers and Disease Burden
Ewing sarcoma (搜索) is a rare bone and soft tissue cancer that most often affects young children and teens. It accounts for about 1% of childhood cancers, with approximately 225 children diagnosed per year according to Johns Hopkins. The American Cancer Society places the national figure at about 200 to 240 children and teens annually.
Beyond the six cases tied to Ladera Ranch, surrounding areas in and around the community have recorded 9 to 12 cases of Ewing and synovial sarcoma (搜索), with six reported deaths. Among those who died were Lily Dalton, a 23-year-old woman who died in January, and Brody Matteson, a 17-year-old who died in March. Matteson was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma (搜索) in August 2024 at age 17; after treatment, he developed acute myeloid leukemia (搜索) as a complication of that therapy.
Regulatory and Institutional Response
The Orange County Health Care Agency (搜索) said several representatives from the California Cancer Registry (搜索), the UCI Cancer Center, and the Orange County Agricultural Commissioner's Office met after the County Health Officer initiated outreach in response to ongoing community concerns earlier this year. "The group agreed to conduct an updated review of cancer data. Findings from this analysis will be shared in upcoming weeks with the County Health Officer as soon as they are available," the agency told the Post.
A 2024 county-level review did not find any unusual pattern, though the community acknowledged the limited data available at the time and called for a more "focused assessment."
The California Department of Public Health said its California Cancer Registry (搜索) evaluates possible cancer clusters by comparing the number of cases diagnosed in a specific community over a defined period with the number that would normally be expected in a similarly sized population based on statewide cancer rates, age groups and time periods. "An apparent increase in a small area does not, by itself, establish that a cluster exists or that a common cause is present," the department said.
Pesticide Concerns and Community Advocacy
The renewed attention follows months of advocacy by local parents who have questioned whether extensive pesticide and herbicide use throughout the 4,000-acre community could be contributing to the illnesses. Residents have spent months researching public records, documenting landscaping practices and pressing officials for greater transparency about the chemicals being used.
During a Ladera Ranch Maintenance Corporation (搜索) meeting last Wednesday, at least 10 residents spoke about pesticide use, including a mother who had lost her son to cancer earlier this year. Residents have demanded that the homeowners association stop spraying pesticides.
Researchers have previously explored possible links between pesticide exposure and certain childhood cancers, including Ewing sarcoma (搜索), but no direct causal relationship has been established. Public health authorities have not identified a specific environmental cause, and officials have not linked Ladera Ranch's landscaping practices to the reported illnesses.
Bruce Blumberg, an environmental health expert at the University of California, Irvine, said communities should minimize pesticide use whenever possible. "If I were a parent living in that area, I would be strongly advocating for elimination of pesticide use," Blumberg said. "In my opinion, it is unreasonable to risk people's health for the cosmetic elimination of weeds and unwanted vegetation." He noted that many California cities have already adopted organics-first landscape management programs.
Legal Investigation and Oversight
Bond Legal (搜索) said it is confidentially gathering information from families whose children lived in or regularly visited Ladera Ranch and were diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma (搜索), osteosarcoma (搜索), leukemia (搜索), lymphoma (搜索) or another rare childhood cancer. The firm is also asking families to share information about possible exposure to pesticides, herbicides, contaminated soil or water, construction materials or other environmental hazards.
"The concentration of cases in a single community is deeply troubling, especially to those who live there," said Candice Bond, managing partner of Bond Legal (搜索). "Families deserve transparency about what their children may have been exposed to. When rare cancers appear in clusters, every environmental factor — no matter how routine it may seem — must be examined carefully."
Bond Legal (搜索) stressed that multiple cancer diagnoses alone do not establish that a particular exposure caused the illnesses and said any legal claims would require reliable scientific, medical and factual evidence. The firm said its investigation could examine historical pesticide and herbicide applications, landscaping and pest-control practices, soil and groundwater conditions, former agricultural land uses, imported fill materials, schools and parks, nearby commercial operations and public records.
The Ladera Ranch Maintenance Corporation (搜索) (LARMAC) said it is establishing an ad hoc advisory committee comprised of homeowners, Board members, staff and landscape professionals to review landscape maintenance practices and provide recommendations. "We understand why residents are seeking answers, and we recognize the concern that recent media coverage has generated throughout our community," LARMAC said, noting it is "not aware of any determination by those agencies identifying a specific environmental cause or linking the Association's landscape management practices to these illnesses."
Assemblywoman Kate Sanchez said she is working with state and local agencies after learning of the reports. "As a mom and as your Assemblywoman, these reports are deeply concerning. My heart is with every family that has been affected," Sanchez said, adding that her office is "actively gathering information, engaging with the appropriate state and local agencies, and reviewing what is known." She pledged to advocate for "a thorough review of the available information, open communication with the community, and full transparency from every entity involved."
People from USC (搜索) have also agreed to conduct their own research into the cases.
